Number of Servings:
Ingredients:
- 1 - 9-inch pastry shell unbaked, chilled
- 6 cups - apples sliced, peeled
- 1/2 cups - granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoons - ground cinnamon
- 1 cups - flour
- 1/2 cups - brown sugar firmly packed
- 1/8 teaspoons - salt
- 1/2 cups - butter softened, sliced
- 1 1/4 cups - Flour
- 1/4 teaspoons - Salt
- 1/3 cups - Shortening
- 5 tablespoons - Cold water Or more if needed
Directions:
For pastry crust, combine flour and salt; cut in shortening with pastry blender or two forks until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add 4 tablespoons of very cold water and stir, pressing to combine. Add water a little more at a time until mixture can be pressed into a ball shape - not too much water or it will be too sticky to roll out.
For pie - combine apples with sugar and cinnamon and mix gently to cover apples well.
Place chilled pie crust into pie pan, pressed firmly to bottom and edges, and pinch (or flute) edges around top edge for decoration. Pour apple mixture into chilled crust.
For crumb topping: combine flour, brown sugar, salt and butter; blend with pastry blender or crumble with fingers until mixture is blended well and is coarse.
Sprinkle crumb topping over apples.
Bake at 375 degrees F until apples are tender and topping is lightly browned, about 50-60 minutes.
Serve with vanilla ice cream for an especially tasty treat!
